Common mistakes / bad habits, muscle soreness

BOARD CONTROL

Rough lesson board control & catching broken waves in shallows

Always surf to conditions at hand, don't go out of your depths, know your abilities, have a back up plan if too rough

Surfing is the Art of Catching Waves – no art of standing up" – so ok to surf broken waves and practice basics

CATCHING WAVES

Look for an A shaped waves not double up, or too green / fat

First 4 paddles = adrenalin, get board moving

Paddle with head up, look back, abs on, shoulder off board

Importance of 2 more paddles once wave hits back of board,

PUSH UP POSITION – "feel feel feel""

TOP TIP – No knees or elbows in surfing, chest up abs on,

3 SCENARIOS WHEN CATCHING WAVES "IN PUSH UP POSITION"

Too early, board slowing down, waves disappearing – keep paddle

Too late – Nose Dive – get back, crash position

Just right – Feel the rush ask 2x Questions – Am I gaining speed, am I getting stable" or push up 1,2,3, jump!!

Timing is everything, every waves, every surf things change,

TOPS TIPS FOR JUMPING TOO FEET

Push up & feel the rush and wait for stability (1,2,3,jump)

Phase 2 – triangle, down dog, no knees

Drag Leg rope foot first into position and at correct angle

Pop up by putting front foot into place

Front shoulder leading forward & head looking up – toward beach)

As you pop up turn front foot to mirror back foot (squat on a surf board)

POSTURE & SHOULDER POSITION

Where ever front shoulder goes, so will you, (down, up, one forward – one back) one hand one knees scenario's

Chest up, core on "squat on a surfboard" – push equally thru ball & heel of foot.

Height – "get down low to go, go, go, height adjustment – slow & speed up board - Constant re adjustment "

Positioning on the board 1/3 – 1/3 – 1/3

Step & slide plus Walking the board "longboard style"

Basic turning, leading with front shoulder & drop knee turns

MOST IMPORTANT NOTES

RESPECT –the ocean, the beach and the people on it

ENJOY – surfing every time, surf to your limit, don't lose the smile off your face, if it stops being fun, its time to hit the beach & re evaluate where you can surf that's safe & fun

PROGRESSION – surfing is about progression, one step at time, Mother Nature always in charge, the waves, wind, tides, sand banks and the crowds dictate EVERY SURF, so take EACH WAVE at a time and ENJOY SURFING!!
